DESCRIPTION

Within the BIOMAC project, a continuous mode processing system capable of handling up to 40 litres of cellulose suspension per hour will be utilised for the production of nano-fibrillated cellulose (NFC). This method will involve the use of a specific grinder, known as the SuperMassColloider (Masuka), with a dry capacity of 5 kg of cellulose pulp per day, containing up to 5% cellulose content.

UPGRADE & MODIFICATION PLAN

To ensure precise control during the process, an inline viscometer will be employed to monitor particle size reduction, which will be expressed through an increase in viscosity. Additionally, a heater will be employed to facilitate in situ reactions and modifications as needed.


Furthermore, various pre-treatment approaches and chemical modifications will be explored to enhance the efficient generation of NFC and promote their compatibility with the polymer matrices of interest. The resulting NFCs will subsequently be incorporated into polymeric matrices to enhance specific properties, as required for our targeted applications.
